Sombrero Grande shares some of his all-time favorite movie lines
Howdy, kids.
Ya know, I've been thinking lately about some of the really great movie lines there have been. Some even seem to take on a life of their own, becoming ingrained pieces of our popular culture. A few are used so often that they're reduced to an almost cliché-like status...but then you actually hear Humphrey Bogart say, “Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine,” in Casablanca and suddenly you're struck by how great a line it is and why it achieved its household familiarity.
I'd like to share with you now some of my very favorite movie lines of all time. I was going to try to make this a top ten list, but I just couldn't narrow it down for the sake of sticking with a popular round number. Also, I knew that as soon as I published this blog I'd think of another one or two that should have made the list...and then the next week I'd remember more...and so on.
So here's a collection of my all-time favorite movie lines as of this posting:
“My father says that almost the whole world is asleep. ... He says that only a few people are awake and they live in a state of constant, total amazement.”
- Meg Ryan as Patricia Graynamore in Joe Versus the Volcano
“A person is smart; people are dumb, panicky animals.”
- Tommy Lee Jones as Agent Kay in Men In Black
“He was gonna take the quotes off the ‘singer.’”
- Joseph Cotten as Jedediah Leland in Citizen Kane
“That's when you know you've found somebody special. When you can just shut the f**k up for a minute and comfortably enjoy the silence.”
- Uma Thurman as Mia Wallace in Pulp Fiction
“I know it was you, Fredo. You broke my heart.”
- Al Pacino as Michael Corleone in The Godfather Part II
“Well, she turned me into a newt! ... I got better.”
- John Cleese as a witch-accusing peasant in Monty Python and the Holy Grail
“No ticket.”
- Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
“Strange things are afoot at the Circle K.”
- Keanu Reeves as Ted Logan in Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure
“I am big; it’s the pictures that got small!”
- Gloria Swanson as Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard
“I'm at the Continental. Come over one day; we'll paint it.”
- Albert Brooks as Daniel Miller in Defending Your Life
“Life is pain, Highness. Anyone who says differently is selling something.”
- Cary Elwes as Westley in The Princess Bride
"No woman in the history of the world is having better sex than you are having with Ian...in my head."
- John Cusak as Rob Gordon in High Fidelity
“Once you go into that circle, the weather never changes. It is always 67 degrees with a 40% chance of rain.”
- David Cross as the UFO expert in Waiting for Guffman
“Well, one thing's for sure: Inspector Clay’s dead, murdered, and somebody's responsible!”
- Duke Moore as Lt. John Harper in Plan 9 From Outer Space
“Now I will kill you until you die from it!”
- Jerry Haleva as Saddam Hussein in Hot Shots: Part Deux
“Now you see that evil will always triumph, because good is dumb.”
- Rick Moranis as Dark Helmet in Spaceballs
"No, Dude. That f***s up our plan."
- John Goodman as Walter Sobchak in The Big Lebowski, after reality interfered with the ridiculous scheme he'd concocted in his head
"It's sucking my will to live!"
- Dana Carvey as Garth Algar in Wayne's World
"We'll settle this the old Navy way; the first guy to die loses!"
- Lloyd Bridges as President Thomas "Tug" Benson in Hot Shots Part Deux
"The joyfulness is over!"
- Peter MacNicol as Dr. Janosz Poha in Ghostbusters 2
"I beat the sh*t out of some kids today, but it was for a purpose. It made me feel good about myself."
- Billy Bob Thornton as Willie in Bad Santa
"Yeah, but, John, when the Pirates of the Caribbean breaks down the pirates don't eat the tourists."
- Jeff Goldblum as Ian Malcolm in Jurassic Park
So there you have it, my favorite movie lines...but I'm sure I'll think of more to post soon. In the meantime, why don't you let me know what some of your favorite movie quotes are? Go ahead and e-mail 'em to me and I'll post 'em.
Until then, movie fans, here's lookin' at you, kid.
